'Bird feeding' and shared baths: All About Alicia Silverstone's controversial parenting style

For many of us, Alicia Silverstone will always be best known for playing Cher Horowitz in the 1990 film Clueless. In contrast, the 43-year-old actress is now an author, the creator of an organic supplement company, and a vegan and animal rights activist.

She also has a son, Bear Blu, who is nine years old, who she had with her ex-husband Christopher Jarecki.

Earlier this year, Silverstone gave a lengthy interview to The New York Times. She discussed her love of veganism, why she stopped performing during her '90s 'It' girl heyday, and how her family has been coping with quarantine.

However, because of what seems to be an unintentional aside about swimming with her kid after the story, attention has shifted to Silverstone's previously mentioned aggressive parenting approach.

Silverstone has garnered media attention for her thoughts on childbirth and parenting over several years, including her support for orgasmic delivery and elimination communication, as well as her argument that disposable diapers are "fueled by corporate-backed pseudoscience."

Alicia Silverstone discusses her son's feeding practices and a vegan diet:

Silverstone has been a vegan since she was 21 years old. However, a video showing her "bird feeding" her infant by chewing food and spitting it into his mouth became famous in 2012.

In addition to the practice of feeding birds, on which experts disagree, Silverstone has frequently mentioned how her son's strict vegan diet is the reason he is so healthy. She discussed it again in her parenting book The Kind Mama, noting that as a result, Bear Blu "never received a drop of medication."

"He's never had to take medicine in his life," she said at a 2018 Good Housekeeping sustainability summit in New York City.

"He can get sniffles and a runny nose, but he's not down; he still goes to school. Two times in his life has he been like, 'Mummy, I don't feel good,' and it was only for a few hours, and he was back running around."

"He is such a model of good health. She recently told Entertainment Tonight that Bear Blu is a vegan youngster and has only been ill "for a few hours at a time." "in his lifetime, twice.

"The ability to go nine years without requiring medical attention or antibiotics... Most children take medication often because they have ear infections so frequently. I do not deny that I would offer it to him. I'm claiming he does not need it."
Suppose care is taken to ensure that all nutritional requirements are satisfied. In that case, a vegan diet can offer a healthy substitute for a diet that contains meat, according to the Victorian Government's Better Health Channel.

Children on any vegetarian diet, especially vegan ones, require special attention. For extremely young children, strict vegan diets are typically not advised.

Alicia Silverstone on vaccinations:

Silverstone is one of several famous people who publicly oppose vaccines, much as her claims that veganism can replace contemporary treatment.

"There has not been a definitive examination of the deleterious impacts of such a strict one-size-fits-all, shoot-'em-up regimen," she stated in her book.

Anecdotal evidence from doctors reporting distressing phone calls from parents stating their child was "never the same" after having a vaccination is growing. And I know acquaintances whose infants suffered grave consequences due to this.

The New York Times quoted Silverstone as saying that some individuals with chronic illnesses like heart disease and MS "end up not requiring [medicine] anymore because they changed their diets" and that tampons cause infertility and veganism can lower the risk of miscarriage.

Alicia Silverstone on bathing and co-sleeping with her son:

Silverstone stated in the same interview that she has recently focused on finding things to do alone with Bear Blu, such as jumping on the trampoline, dancing, jump roping, and taking showers.

When her son isn't around, she takes a bath herself, which she described as nutritious and soothing.
